Essential Guide: How to Store and Clean Your FX Silicone Molds for Unlimited Life

Bondo FX Silicone Molds are a "golden" investment in your go-to kit. Their longevity depends on your disciplined care. A deformed or contaminated mold not only ruins a prosthesis but also forces you to replace it prematurely.

A 360 Makeup Artist knows that the job doesn't end when the flat mold is removed, but when it is stored correctly.

Follow this three-pillar guide (Cleaning, Storage, and Reactivation) to ensure a virtually unlimited lifespan for your tools.

Pillar 1:
Immediate Cleaning (The One Minute Rule)

The biggest enemy of silicone is the chemical residue from Bondo (Transfer Silicone) that hardens in the micro-grooves of the mold.

  1. Demolding and Post-Use Cleaning : Once you have removed the Bondo prosthesis, use the "Minute Rule" : clean the mold immediately.

  2. The IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) Bath: Use a soft cloth or cotton swab soaked in IPA (99%) to gently clean the surface of the mold.

    • Touch Technique: Do not rub aggressively, but use small touches or gentle drags so that the IPA dissolves and lifts the silicone residue.

    • Pay attention to the micro-grooves: Pay special attention to the fine details and edges. Use a soft-bristled brush and a little IPA to remove any residue.

  3. Rinsing and Drying: After IPA, rinsing with water and neutral soap is optional, but always make sure the mold is completely dry and free of residual moisture before storing it.

Pillar 2:
Anti-deformation storage

Silicone is flexible, but prolonged deformation can permanently ruin the shape of the model.

  1. Flat Storage: Never store molds folded, rolled, or crushed under other heavy objects. They should be stored on a flat surface or in a dedicated drawer.

  2. UV and Dust Protection: Store the molds in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight . UV radiation can degrade the silicone over time. Use:

    • Quality Ziploc Bags: Ideal for protecting each mold individually from dust and preventing contact between them.

    • Flat File Boxes: Perfect for stacking molds safely without putting pressure on the design.

  3. Chemical Separation: Ensure your silicone molds do not come into contact with strong solvents (acetone, etc.) or mineral oils during storage. Silicone is durable, but continuous contact can affect its surface.

Pillar 3:
Reactivation and Conditioning

Over time, silicone can lose some of its flexibility and shine. Gentle conditioning can revitalize it.

  1. Gentle Conditioning (Optional): If you notice that your mold has become somewhat stiff or dull after many uses, you can apply a minimal amount of food-grade silicone oil (or a silicone-specific conditioner) on a cloth.

  2. Light Massage: Gently massage the mold with the cloth. This can help replenish the surface oils of the silicone, slightly improving demolding in the future.

  3. Excess Removal: Remove any excess oil with a dry cloth before using the mold again.

Conclusion

Your FX Silicone Molds are your canvas. By adopting these simple cleaning and storage protocols, you not only ensure your Bondo prosthetics are perfect shot after shot, but you also demonstrate the professionalism of a 360 Makeup Artist.
